COMMUNITY HUMAN SERVICES HOSTS MICRO-SHELTER OPEN HOUSE FRIDAY, JANUARY 19

(Monterey, CA) Community Human Services, a nonprofit that provides homeless, mental health, and substance abuse services in Monterey County, is hosting the Pallet Shelter company’s travelling road show for the public to view and explore Pallet Shelter’s latest models of transitional micro-shelters.

Two of their newest models will be available for the public to visit on Friday, January 19th, from 10am to 4pm in the parking lot at the Shuman HeartHouse homeless shelter, located at 600 East Franklin Street in Monterey. The open house is free and open to all.

The open house is part of Pallet Shelter’s California Road Show, which began in Sacramento on January 9th and will end in San Diego later this month. The State of California recently approved Pallet Company as one of six manufacturers of temporary dwellings for homeless residents. Other state-approved manufacturers are:

  1. Factory OS: A Vallejo-based company that makes modular units that can be stacked and turned into apartment buildings, or used alone as tiny homes.
  2. Boss: A Montebello-based tiny home company.
  3. Irontown Modular: A Utah-based modular construction company.
  4. AMEG: An El Dorado Hills-based modular home builder.
  5. Plugin House Company: An Austin, Texas-based modular home company.

The California state government is planning to purchase 1200 micro-shelters to be set up as ‘villages’ with supportive services in Los Angeles, San Jose, Sacramento, and San Diego County. According to CalMatters, “other cities not included in this state program can use their own funds to purchase the tiny homes without going through a lengthy process of seeking bids from multiple vendors.”

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution to unsheltered homelessness. Communities should be encouraged to explore all options and choose what works best for them,” said Robin McCrae, CEO of Community Human Services.
