Shuman HeartHouse: A Homeless Shelter for Women and Families with Children

The board of directors of Community Human Services (CHS) has approved the acquisition of 600 E. Franklin Street in Monterey for use as a homeless shelter for women and families.

The acquisition of the Franklin Street property is made possible through the generosity of local philanthropist Mark Shuman and his family.  “We really appreciate the donor’s generosity and are excited about the opportunity to continue to serve the needy residents of the Monterey Peninsula.  We think that this is going to be an important part of the solution moving forward,” said board member Alan Haffa.

Built in 1930, the historical Franklin Street property was once the Union Ice Factory and is now home to Arthur Murray Dance Studio.  CHS will be undertaking a capital campaign to raise funds for capital improvements to convert the use to a 30-35 bed shelter.  Preliminary estimate for the improvements is $1M to $1.5M.  Wald, Rhunke & Dost is the architect.

The capital campaign and improvements are expected to take about a year each, making the target date for shelter opening roughly the summer of 2023.  CHS will also be raising operating income each year for the new shelter.

“What an incredible gift the Shumans have given to our community,” said Robin McCrae, CEO of Community Human Services.  “Now it’s up to us, the community, to do our part.”

Mark Shuman said, “I’m super proud to be part of this project and happy to be working with Community Human Services to bring something to Monterey that we don’t have.”  Shuman also provides support to CHS’s runaway and homeless youth programs.  He recently partnered with Community Human Services and the nonprofit Gathering for Women to establish the Peninsula’s first homeless shelter for women and families.

Shuman HeartHouse will provide temporary shelter, supportive services and a path to stable housing.
