Community Human Services (CHS) and the “Stamp out Homelessness” project has been selected to be one of this year’s participating BIG IDEAS in this year’s Monterey County Gives! (McGives!) fundraising campaign.  A collaboration between the Monterey County Weekly, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and the Community Foundation for Monterey County, McGives! is a campaign in which local businesses, foundations and individuals contribute to an overall matching fund that spurs donations for participating organizations.  McGives! officially begins on November 10th and ends December 31st.

The campaign directs donors to the McGives! website where anyone can donate online to the BIG IDEA of their choice. At the end of the campaign, each nonprofit receives 100% of their donations, along with a pro-rated match on the first $75,000 raised. More than $45 million has been raised and granted since 2009.

CHS has been taking big ideas and turning them into viable, sustainable solutions for over 50 years in Monterey County. CHS’s BIG IDEA is to Stamp Out Homelessness! Over 2,000 people in Monterey County are homeless and CHS is the only organization in Monterey County providing shelter, transitional supportive housing, and street outreach for transition-aged youth with Safe Place/Safe Passage. CHS also provides supportive services for women and families with Casa de Noche Buena shelter in Seaside, and soon with a second shelter in Monterey, Shuman HeartHouse, opening in 2023.

Before the campaign gets underway, philanthropists can help “Stamp out Homelessness” by committing to a Challenge Gift to Community Human Services via McGives! A Challenge Gift is meant to inspire more donations to CHS. It can be made by an individual, a family, a business, or a group of donors. The deadline for making a Challenge Gift is Oct. 24.

CHS is a 501c (3) nonprofit Joint Powers agency dedicated to providing high quality mental health, substance abuse and homeless services to Monterey County residents to help them reach their full potential.
