August 31, 2022 – Local musicians are teaming up with the nonprofit Community Human Services to raise awareness about the homeless crisis facing women and families with children in Monterey County and a new homeless shelter under development in Monterey.
Singer/songwriter Lauren Monroe, legendary drummer Rick Allen, Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Tammi Brown, Emmy-award winning composer John Wineglass, local singer/songwriter 14-year-old Katherine Lavin, artist, and musician Jayson Fann, and others will partner with Community Human Services for a benefit concert for Shuman HeartHouse on October 2nd at the Garden Stage/Monterey Fairgrounds.
“I’ve been speaking with some of the most well-known, talented musical artists in our area and we decided we needed to collectively use our voices and do something important to help vulnerable women and kids in our community,” said Jayson Fann. “We feel passionate about making it happen, however we can.”
Community Human Services is in the process of developing Shuman HeartHouse, a shelter and supportive services program designed to help people gain permanent housing. Shuman HeartHouse will be located at 600 E. Franklin Street in Monterey and is slated to open in Summer 2023. CHS currently operates Casa de Noche Buena, a shelter for women and families in Seaside, operated in partnership with the Gathering for Women, and Safe Place, an emergency shelter for youth ages 18-24 in Monterey.
“It’s a powerful thing when local artists and musicians come forward and say they want to help create change in our community,” said CHS executive director Robin McCrae. “We’re thrilled to accept their generous gifts of time and talent to support our work on the new homeless shelter.”
For over 50 years, Community Human Services has been making a positive impact in Monterey County through prevention, intervention, and treatment services for substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness.
