For those experiencing homelessness, meeting basic needs is a constant challenge. Today, over two thousand people in Monterey County struggle to meet those needs every day. Community Human Services (CHS) is changing that by creating Shuman HeartHouse, a new shelter for homeless women and families with just $300,000 left needed to fund the capital campaign. In honor of World Homeless Day, a generous donor has stepped up to match donations made to Shuman HeartHouse through the month of October (up to $150,000).
Shuman HeartHouse, slated to open summer 2023, will accommodate up to 35 individuals, provide temporary housing, meals, and vital supportive services, including housing navigation. The project was born from a vision of local businessman/philanthropist, Mark Shuman, who sought to create additional shelter for homeless women and families. After CHS’ Seaside-based Casa de Noche Buena shelter opened in January 2021, Shuman realized the need to support those experiencing homelessness was still great and more was required to address it. He approached CHS with an offer to provide funding to purchase the building at 600 Franklin Street, the former Arthur Murray Dance Studio in hopes that his generous gift would inspire an outpouring of community giving.
Shuman says, “A lot of people are just a paycheck away from not being in stable housing. In the community we live in, with the lack of affordable housing, it’s a struggle for everyone. Some people just need that little bit of help to get them back on track. It’s going to take the whole community to make this happen.”
